Essential oils are aromatic oils found in plants; they give herbs their taste and flowers their scent. An essential oil consists of numerous chemical components and is usually described as a plant’s “hormones” and “defense system”. The potency of essential oils and should not be underestimated; some oil are beneficial and others could harm you if misused.
Throughout history you find references to plant extracts and their medicinal properties. Vedic literature names over 700 substances and its properties, herbs were used in Ancient China, Ancient Egypt and Hippocrates prescribed aromatic formulations. However for the last century science has replaced tradition and essential oils are now mainly used in spas treatments, natural skin care and as fragrances.
The perception of essential oils is changing however. Today researchers are looking at plant chemistry to find new drugs. Some believe that refined essential oils is a future alternative to antibiotics, other are looking at plant chemistry for cancer cures. It is important to note that this research is at a very early stage and there is not enough data draw any conclusions yet.
Let’s face it though you don’t need a clinical trial to know that a hot bath with a lavender blend will relax you, may it just be placebo.

Lavender and chamomile, both are calming, soothing and relaxing. Lavender is also known to have an antibacterial effect.
Lemon and rosemary are two uplifting and refreshing oils. (Some claim that rosemary also improves your memory).
Oregano and tea tree oils could aid colds and acne prone skin, due to its antiseptic properties.
