Last summer I spent a couple of weeks in Greece and there, for the first time, I saw sunflower fields. It was stunning. Field after field with large, golden flowers dancing in in the sunset. Then and there I decided to look into the properties of sunflower oil and potentially use it in a formulation. Here’s what I found.
Sunflower seed oil has a high content of linoleic acid, which helps to maintain the skin barrier and prevent moisture from leaving your skin. Also several studies show that the oil has healing and anti-inflammatory properties. Comparative studies between olive oil and sunflower oil show that sunflower oil restores the skin barrier function more efficient than olive oil. The oil has also been used on premature babies to protect their skin. Sunflower seed oil is rich in vitamin E, a well-known antioxidant that protects your skin from free radicals. As a final note it has a lovely texture and gives the skin a soft and smooth feel.
You probably understand that it was an easy decision for me to start working on a moisturizer containing sunflower oil, and we’re very happy with the results. The products are in the final stages of the testing and so far everything is on track.
So watch this space the new formulations will be available soon.
