Oils

Oils are a vital part of any moisturizer, so it’s important to understand the basics when creating your personal skin care.

Some oils penetrate the skin. The fatty acids act as protective fillers between your skin cells, giving you more healthy-looking skin. Others combat dehydration (trans epidermal water loss) by preventing water from leaving the surface of the skin.

Oils extracted from seeds and nuts consist of many different fatty acids. The more saturated the fatty acids, the more solid the oil (or butter). As each oil has a unique composition – with variations of fatty acids and other trace components such as vitamins and minerals – different oils will have different effects on the skin.

Thick, rich oils such as avocado and olive oil are suitable for dry skin, whereas lighter oils, such as kiwi seed oil, might be better for acne prone skin. There are also universal oils suitable for most skin types.
